South Africa introduced the First Decimal Series of coins in 1961. This series, also referred to as the transitional period, was issued until 1964. The Second Decimal Series was released in 1965, the Third Decimal Series in 1990 and the Fourth Decimal and current series in 2023. The 2nd (1965 - 1990) series had denominations discontinued and re-introduced during the course of the series, with clad coins making their appearance in 1990 replacing bronze and nickel coinage in the Third Decimal Series. A redesigned series was introduced in 2023 with the introduction of the Fourth Decimal Series. The four decimal series changeover and discontinued coins can still be collected with relative ease.
For the pocket change collector, the 2022-2023 LOFO circulated series in good condition is possible with little effort and at no extra cost.
